Abstract

Textbooks are learning media that mostly used now. Textbooks not only contain the material but also contain social phenomena, including gender roles in society. Textbooks can influence the mindset of readers, especially student’s mindset. Therefore, the representation of gender in textbooks must be balanced in all aspects. Teachers and books are two agents of socialization that support each other to form a good understanding of gender equality in student’s mindset. The purpose of this research is to describe how is gender representations in textbook “English In Mind (second edition)” for Seventh grade based on reading texts, dialogues, and pictures and to find out the essence of gender in textbook and the contextualization of gender representation in the current English teaching situation. This research method is a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. This study used data analysis techniques from six aspects of logsdon’s theory namely, Female/male pictures, Female/male mentioned, Female/male roles, Female/male role models, Pattern of mentioning female/male names, Activities of female/male. The result shows that male are dominant in 5 aspects, while female are only dominant in one aspect, namely Female/male mentioned. There are still stereotypes in the division of work and housework between females and males in textbook. The representation of textbook entitled English in Mind (second edition) for class VII is still imbalance. Furthermore teachers must create learning activity based on gender equality during teaching English situation. It will make students to encouraged theirs knowledges to apply in their daily lives.
