Abstract

Using textbooks was one of the most important aspects of learning English successfully, as textbooks were a standard source of information in learning that plays an important role for both teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. Teachers make textbooks a foundation in teaching, as well as when teaching a foreign language such as English at school. One of the English textbooks used in many schools as a guide for teachers and students in the English teaching and learning process is “English for Nusantara” textbook for the eight grade Junior High School. Although the used of English for Nusantara textbook was widespread, no research has examined the speaking assessment tasks included in this text. It was difficult to assess how well the textbook supports the development of students' speaking skills without a thorough understanding of the speaking assessment tasks in the textbook. Thus, the objectives of this research were: (1) To find out the types of speaking assessment contained in the English textbook "English For Nusantara" for the eight grade of junior high school students published by the ministry of education, culture, research and technology. (2) To determine the suitability of speaking assessment types in the English textbook entitled "English For Nusantara" with the merdeka curriculum. Library research can be defined as research conducted in a library setting to gather information about a subject through books or audiovisual aids. The subject of this research was English For Nusantara textbooks used in the context of learning English in Indonesia. Data was collected through document analysis that includes task descriptions, assessment types, and instructions given for each task. In analyzing the data, researcher used the method of data reduction, display, and conclusion, namely selecting data to be used, then presented clearly and looking for conclusions. The results of this research showed that: (1) There were four types of speaking assessment in English for Nusantara textbook of five types of speaking assessment based on Brown's theory. The four types of speaking assessment are intensive, responsive, interactive and extensive. The intensive type was the most common type of speaking assessment, while the responsive type was the least common type of speaking assessment found. (2) The speaking assessment in the English for Nusantara textbook was compatible with the merdeka curriculum because the speaking assessment tasks have been well developed by fulfilling the indicators in the merdeka curriculum.
