Abstract
Language and culture are inseparable and connected to each other. When people learn about any other language from other communities, then unconsciously they will also learn the culture of the community. It means that by learning another language it is also the second way of exploring the world. So, cross-cultural understanding is really important in order to increase student awareness and appreciation toward other cultures especially in ELT class. And this can be done by inserting cultural value in ELT textbooks used by students. This study aims to reveal the representation of Indonesia and western culture in ELT textbooks used by Junior High School students of Indonesia published by MONEC and Erlangga. The researcher employs descriptive content analysis based on Yuen checklist and examines some aspects in the form of visuals and verbal data. The result showed that the two sets of textbooks have been dominated by Indonesian culture with products and practice being the most mentioned aspects. Furthermore, the verbal data shows that Indonesian culture is dominant in MONEC textbooks while the visual data shows that western cultures are dominant in Erlangga textbooks.
