Abstract
This study aims to find out the answers to the formulation of the problem. This thesis discusses students' anxiety in speaking English in the eighth grade at MTs. Asy'ariyyah Tlogowungu Pati. In this final project the researcher has three research problems, the first is to find out the types of students' anxiety in speaking English, the second is to find out the factors of students' anxiety in speaking English, and the third is to find out the strategies used to overcome students' anxiety in speaking English in MTs. Asy'ariyyah Tlogowungu Pati. This type of research uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Researchers used data collection techniques through observation, interviews with school principals, English teachers and 6 eighth graders as well as documentation. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis, data reduction, data presentation, verification, and triangulation. The results showed: 1) There were three types of students' anxiety in speaking English in the eighth grade of MTs. Asy’ariyyah Tlogowungu Pati. Namely self-anxiety,it occured when students feel panic and anxiety when they want to speak. Anxiety in nature, namely students feel nervous when they cannot understand the material presented by the teacher. Anxiety about specific situations, when students have to do an English speaking test in front of the class. 2) There were three factors that cause students' anxiety in speaking English. Namely communication apprehension, students could not speak English because they have weak abilities. Test anxiety, students feel anxious when facing a test given by the teacher to speak English in front of the class. Students were afraid of getting a negative assessment from the teacher and were afraid of being laughed at by their friends if they make mistakes while speaking English. 3)There were three strategies to overcome students' anxiety in speaking English. Namely with preparation, relaxation, and approach.
