Abstract
Reading material is material derived from several references such as books, journals, documents, newspapers, magazines, and others. Reading materials usually contain certain information that will be conveyed to readers. The information is useful to increase knowledge and insight for readers. In choosing reading material that is suitable with reader’s level understanding, the selection can be seen from various aspects, one of the aspects is lexical density. Lexical density aims to determine how informative a text is. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to find out the lexical density in the Esensi Bahasa Inggris textbook for 10th grade of senior high school, and the distribution of lexical density in all reading material texts. This study uses a qualitative approach, there is research that presents data in the form of facts found during research. Besides using a qualitative approach, this research also using quantitative approach. Quantification is only used to support the percentage of lexical density. The data sources used in this study are primary and secondary data sources. The primary data source is taken from the Esensi Bahasa Inggris textbook for 10th grade of senior high school published by CV Mediatama in 2022, which implements Kurikulum Merdeka. For secondary data sources, the writer take from several books and journals, one of them is Lexical Diversity and Lexical Density in Speech and Writing: A Developmental Perspective by Victoria Johansson. The writer analyzes the lexical density by using Ure's formula. The results of this study indicate: 1) The reading material in the Esensi Bahasa Inggris textbook has 9 genres. 2) Based on the analysis of lexical density of 20 reading materials using the Ure formula, it was found that 6 texts have lower lexical density, 12 texts have quiet lexical density, and 2 texts have high lexical density. The average number of lexical density is 53.02% which indicates quiet lexical density criteria. 3) From the analysis of the distribution of lexical density into 7 units, it resulted that 5 units are included in the criteria of quiet lexical density, and 2 units are included in the criteria of lower lexical density. This shows that the lexical density in the textbook analyzed by the writer is included in the criteria of quiet lexical density.
