Abstract

Learning English certainly cannot be separated from one of most important skills, namely speaking, listening, writing and reading. Speaking is one of the language skills that should be mastered, especially in the learning process. A person’s level of speaking can be known from fluency or not their speaking ability, which can be influenced by motivation when learning. Motivation can also influenced by several factors. The aims of the study were to find out students’ motivation in speaking skills, to find out the factors that influence students’ motivation in learning speaking, and to find out the strategies used by the teacher to enhance students’ motivation in speaking skills. This research was conducted at MA NU Kudus, especially in class XI MIPS 1. The participants in this study were taken using a purposive sampling, they were the English teacher and three students. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data was obtained using three techniques, namely: interview, observation and documentation. The data validation in this study used source triangulation and technique triangulation. The results of this study indicated that: First, the students’ motivation level which were the medium level, it means students’ motivation has an impact on their speaking skills in learning outcomes. Second, there are supporting and inhibiting factors that influence students’ motivation, the supporting factors are society, significant other and self-factors. While the inhibiting factors is self-factors where if those factors are considered properly, it can be used for teacher considerations to find out what the learning strategies the teacher should use. Third, the strategies used by the teacher to enhance students’ motivation included creating and practicing conversation in the class, motivating students and using media. These strategies were expected to make students more understand about the material that has ben explained and give an improvement to their speaking skills
