Abstract

One of the most important skills to develop in learning English is speaking skills. Speaking is a way to use language as a means of communicating with others. This speaking skill is very feared by students when practising speaking in front of the class. This makes students anxious and stressed when learning English. The anxiety experienced by students will hinder the learning process and student success in improving speaking skills. This study aims to describe students' anxiety in speaking English of the eighth grade. This research intends to find out the level of anxiety of students, what factors cause students' anxiety in speaking English, and strategies to reduce anxiety in speaking English. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The questionnaire was developed by Horwitz and consisted of 33 questions with a 5-point Likert scale. The results of this study showed that one student (6%) experienced a very anxious level, 2 students (12%) were at an anxious level, 11 students (65%) were at a mildly anxious level and 3 students (18%) had a relaxed level. Factors that cause anxiety consist of three components. The first is communication apprehension, there are 3 points that reach 50%, found in number 1 has 13 participants who strongly agree (76%), numbers 9 and 24 have 9 participants who strongly agree (52%). The second is fear of negative evaluation there is 1 point that less reaches 50%, found in number 21 has 7 participants who strongly agree (41%). The third is test anxiety there is 1 point that reaches 50%, found in number 31 has 11 participants who strongly agree (64%). As for strategies to reduce student anxiety based on Kondo and Ling's theory, there were 9 (53%) respondents chose preparation, 2 (12%) respondents chose preparation and relaxation, 1 (6%) respondent chose preparation, relaxation, and positive thinking, 2 respondents (12%) chose resignation, 1 respondent (6%) chose positive thinking, 1 respondent (6%) chose relaxation, and finally there was 1 respondent (6%) chose everything (preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, seeking peers and resignation) to reduce student anxiety when speaking English before going in front of the class
