Abstract

English textbooks are one of the learning media for English. Students can understand the material and practice English well. In the English textbook students will learn four aspects such as reading, writing, speaking and listening. Although learning a foreign language, students must still be able to hold the ideology of nation so that it is not easily influenced by foreign cultures. Therefore, the problems in this study are how the values of Pancasila in the English Textbook When English Rings a Bell for grade VII SMP/ MTs published by the Ministry of Education and Culture and how the values of character education in Pancasila to create character education. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach that relies on library study. Data collection techniques are conducted by reading an English textbook, collecting and categorizing the contents then identifying based on Pancasila values and character education. To analyze the data, researchers used data reduction, data display and conclusion. To explain the data, the researcher uses a narrative to reveal an image and text. Then, the researcher concluded the data using Van Dijk and Fairclough's CDA analysis method. The results show that the English textbook When English Rings a Bell for grade VIII SMP/ MTs published by the Ministry of Education and Culture contains the values of the five precepts of Pancasila. Tolerance and living in harmony with different and beliefs in Indonesia is the first precept. Help each other and do not discriminate between people based on religion, economic, education, ethnicity and skin color, it is second precept. Always maintain harmony and love of the homeland, it is the third precept. The deliberation to make a mutual decision and to accentuate the common interest above the interest of individuals and groups when conducting deliberation to reach consensus is the fourth precept. Being fair and appreciating the work of others is the fifth precept. The values of character education such as respecting other faiths, upholding a tolerance and living harmoniously with another religion is a religious character. Love of the homeland and respect the diversity of culture, ethnicity and religion is the nationalist character. The values of integrity show how to behave to others so that they can trust their words, actions and loyalty. The values of independence shows the spirit of work, creativity and use all of energy and mind to realize hopes and dreams. Helping each other, working together and appreciating the spirit is a reflection of cooperation.
