Abstract
In high school education, English is a compulsory subject that must be studied, including English skills and English components. Based on the problem found by the researcher, the students of the eleventh grade at MA Darul Ulum Purwogondo had difficulty in understanding the simple present tense, either in memorizing formulas or mastering vocabulary. This study was a quantitative correlation research. The researcher used the mastery of the simple present tense as the independent variable and the ability to write analytical exposition texts as the dependent variable. The population in this study was 122 students. In taking the sample, the researcher took 27% of the total population. The number of samples produced was 33. In collecting data, the researcher used two instruments; (1) simple present tense test, and (2) analytical exposition text test. In the simple present tense instrument, the researcher conducted a tryout to test the validity. The result was that there were 33 valid items out of 50 items. While to test the reliability, the researcher used Cronbach’s Alpha in the SPSS version 25.0 program which was showed a value of 0.904 (very high reliability). In the analytical exposition text instrument, the researcher used content validity. The test result of the variabel X showed that 61 was the lowest score, 91 was the highest score, and 77.91 was the mean score. Based on the interval score table, the mean score of the variabel X was in poor category. While, the test result of the variabel Y showed that 57 was the lowest score, 91 was the highest score, and 78.36 was the mean score. On the variabel Y, there were more students scored above the mean score (21 students) than below the mean score (12 students). Based on the test results, the mean score of the variable X was in fair category. In prerequisite test, the researcher used normality and linearity tests. The normality test showed that significance for the variabel X was 0.347 ≥ 0.05 and the variabel Y was 0.009 ≤ 0.05, it means that the variabel X was from normal distribution, but the variabel Y was not from normal distribution. Then the linearity test showed that significance of defiation from linearity was 0.524 ≥ 0.05, it means that the correlation between the variables X and Y was linear. To find out the correlation between the variables X and Y, the researcher used Spearman's Rank in the SPSS version 25.0 program. The result showed that the significance value (0.000) was smaller than the alpha value (0.05). It means that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. In other words, there was a significant correlation between students' mastery in the simple present tense and their writing ability in analytical exposition texts at MA Darul Ulum Purwogondo
