Abstract

The entry of the world in the 21st century era where the development of science and technology is growing rapidly so that competitiveness is also getting tighter. This has an impact on all areas of human life, including the field of education. Education is one of the main areas to equip the young generation with the skills needed to overcome challenges and achieve success in the 21st century era. Therefore, the system and curriculum in Indonesia are always undergoing changes and improvements to be able to equip students to be ready to face this era and in the future. 4Cs are skills needed in 21st century namely critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration. In this study, English teachers are considered to have an important role in strengthening these 4C skills because English is an international language and it is important to be mastered by everyone, so English teachers should be ready for the challenges that exist and perform their roles well. This study is aimed to describe the roles of English teachers in strengthening students’ critical thinking and communication competencies in the 21st century era and to find out the challenges faced by English teachers and their solutions in carrying out those roles. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were two English teachers and four students as informants. The data was collected through interview, observation, and documentation techniques. Based on findings and discussion. The result showed that (1) there are 9 roles of the English teacher at MTs NU Hasyim Asy’ari 2 Gebog Kudus in strengthening students' critical thinking and communication competencies, namely the teacher’s role as learner, instructor, educator, guide, manager, facilitator, motivator, assessor, and evaluator. The teacher's role as an instructor becomes the dominant role in strengthening students' critical thinking and communication skills by using the lecture and role-play method. On average, students are only able to master several criteria of critical thinking and communication competencies. (2) the challenges faced by teachers and solutions for teachers are; teachers have not been able to present creative and innovative learning and teachers have not been able to utilize technology optimally. Hence, teachers should broaden their insight, collect creative ideas, train their own creativity, and try to master technology. Then, the obstacles are sometimes the lack of students' desire to think and learn English, students being less active in learning and students' habits are still low in using English. Therefore, teachers must always provide motivation and maximize learning media so that students are interested in learning.
