Abstract

English as International Language is very important for people around the world in their daily life and that is why they need to learn English, especially from the basic knowledge that is vocabulary. Idioms are fixed expressions that cannot be translated word by word and it is used in daily life communication to explain or describe something. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative research using Boatner and Gates Theory. The data were analyzed using Boatner and Gates semiotic theory that divided idioms into four types of idiomatic expression, namely lexemic idiom that more divided into verbal, nominal, adverbial and adjectival idiom, phraseological idiom, frozen idiom and proverb idiom. It aimed to categorize the idiomatic expressions found in Zootopia movie. Furthermore, the researcher presented the contextual meaning of idiomatic expressions by using three dictionaries from the 4th edition of American idiom Dictionary by Boatner, Gates and Adam Makkai Dictionary (2004), NTC’s English Idiom Dictionary by Richard and Betty (1998), and online web dictionary thefreedictionary. The result of this research showed that there are 94 data found in movie script and dominated by verbal idiom and it's followed by phraseological idiom, adverbial idiom, nominal idiom, adjectival idiom and last is proverb idiom. The researcher didn’t find frozen idiom in movie script. In addition, the researcher stated that using idiom in a movie can improve students listening and speaking skills. The researcher statement was also supported by some some previous studies and one of the research validators. The researcher expected that the finding of the research can be useful as references for future studies. The researcher also suggested that this topic can conduct with a different object such as books, songs, comic strips, video blogs or another object with a different theory because the researcher did not find all the types of idiomatic expression in Zootopia movie.
