Abstract

This research studies the use of deixis in reading text. There are three objectives in this research. The objectives are to find out the kinds of deixis, the percentage of deixis, and the use of deixis in reading text provided in the textbook “Pathway to English” Peminatan Programme grade XI of Senior High School. Descriptive qualitative research was performed in this study. The research findings were presented in words, sentences, and phrases in the reading text provided in the textbook “Pathway to English” for Peminatan Programme grade XI of Senior High School. In collecting the data, the writer uses analysis of written documents as the method. Data collection was carried out in various steps, including data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusion and verification.. The results of this research showed that the three kinds of deixis based on Levinson's theory are used in the reading text provided in the textbook “Pathway to English” for Peminatan Programme grade XI of Senior High School, they are person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. The total deixis used in the play is 349 times. The percentage of deixis is 89,39% for person deixis, 2,29% for spatial deixis, and 8,30% for temporal deixis. Meanwhile, the writer of reading textbook uses person deixis while referring to things as well as when addressing people who are mentioned in the texts as well as those who are not. The spatial definition also refers to a location's proximity or distance. Temporal deixis thus refers to a certain time.
