Abstract

Accuracy and fluency in speaking are needed so that communication can run smoothly. With a time allocation of only 2 hours a week, learning English in high school is required to be able to equip students with English language skills; speaking is one of them. SCL is seen as a necessity in today's era. This research is a qualitative case study, which aims to describe the application of student-centered learning in group presentation activities at a private high school in Kudus and how student-centered learning in group presentation activities can improve students' speaking accuracy and fluency. The results of this study found that the use of SCL in this research was in the form of guided discovery learning. In Guided Discovery Learning, students tried to find sources of information related to explanation text, discussed it with a group of friends, and presented it in front of the class while the teacher acts as a guide and a facilitator. Accuracy in terms of grammar and word choice was obtained because the presentation materials are taken from several sources, such as student worksheets, books, and the internet, not from themselves. For fluency in speaking, the presentation was done by reading the discussion text, but this did not make the presentation run efficiently because there are shortcomings, namely vernacular accents, and mispronunciations; lack of rhythm and intonation; and there are still some pauses.
