Abstract

This study aims to find out what difficulties students experience in reading comprehension. In addition, students can also understand where their deficiencies are related to reading comprehension, students can get more information by reading since it is a window of knowledge. Reading is one aspect of language skills that is very important in every person’s life, both at school and university whenever the students study. However, students also need to understand what they read so that the information can be easy to understand. This research approach is qualitative research. The types of data instrument collection are observations, interviews, and documentations The subject of this study were students of XI MA Sholahuddin Kerangkulon Wonosalam Demak. The results of the study showed that the majority of XI MA Sholahuddin students had difficulty understanding English Reading Comprehension, which could be seen from the reading comprehension process in class and also from the results of the interviews which showed that students were not interested or even disliked reading activities, especially English Reading text. Of eight students as respondents, only two student had an interest in and rather liked reading activities. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that students’ interest in reading, mastery of vocabulary, perceived English as complext, supporting factors, and limited English literacy were also factors causing students to experience difficulties in reading comprehension. In addition that the reason is that students do not have the motivation to learn and read English because they do not understand what methods are comfortable to apply to learning and when the students read a text, they tend to think that the reader is correct and it has nothing to be questioned. From the result obtained, it was concluded that it was recommended to be used as additional knowledge to be able to understand of class XI students in the reading comprehension
