Abstract

Juvenile delinquency at this time has shown a shift in quality to criminal act. In earlier times, juvenile delinquency was limited just to skipping school, breaking the rules, now it has turned to criminal acts such as theft, rape, and murder. So that character education, especially in instilling human values is really needed. This is a reason for the researcher to conduct a study regarding how human values are represented in the textbook “English Think Globally Act Locally” for class IX SMP/MTS published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. As for this study, researchers used a descriptive qualitative method with a literature study approach. In the data collection stage, researchers used documentation techniques by reading and studying related textbook. While in analyzing the data, the researcher uses the CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) model which in its application seeks to explore the language used to represent ideology, identity, and social relations built through discourse. The results of the study show that the representation of human values in the textbooks studied can be seen through a number of sentences in the form of dialogues and several pictures in the textbooks. The use of grammar according to students’ abilities is an indicator of success in conveying the meaning of human values. The author’s expertise in narrating textbooks is also very good. This can be seen in several parts, starting from the giving of local names to the characters depicted, the depiction of characters that show the facts of the diversity of races, ethnicities and religions in Indonesia, as well as the depiction of various local cultures. So, it is hoped that the implementation of human values in the textbook can be easily received by students. The suggestions for the next researcher are to analyze the teacher’s role in conveying messages in textbooks to students. Thus, it is hoped that the national education goals, as determined by the Ministry of Education and Culture, can be achieved optimally.
