Abstract

English grammar is an important part and considered as a significant element in English learning. English learners must have knowledge and understanding of linguistic elements which include grammar, especially tenses. But tense is quite difficult for Indonesian students, since in the Indonesian language there are no tenses or changes of verbs. Simple past tense is one of the challenging tenses for Indonesian learners, where the verb needs to be changed. In learning tenses, reading activities are required for students to gain more new knowledge about a changing verb. So, having habit of reading maybe will directly have a relationship with their grammatical mastery, especially simple past tense mastery. This research aimed to know 1) the quality of students’ reading habits of English texts at 10th grade of MA Ihyaul Ulum; 2) the quality of students’ mastery of simple past tense at 10th grade of MA Ihyaul Ulum; 3) the correlation between students’ reading habits of English texts and students’ mastery of simple past tense at 10th grade of MA Ihyaul Ulum. This was a field research which used quantitative research and the type was correlational research. The sample was taken by used simple random sampling technique with a total of 80 students from 10th grade of MA Ihyaul Ulum. The data were collecting by distributing questionnaire for reading habits (X variable) and assessing test of simple past tense mastery (Y variable). The result of this research showed that 1) the quality of students’ reading habits of English texts at 10th grade of MA Ihyaul Ulum was in low category with the mean score was 63.04; 2) the quality of simple past tense mastery at 10th grade of MA Ihyaul Ulum was in the low category with the mean score was 61.03; 3) In the hypothesis test, it was found that the significance is 0.00. it is lower than α (0.00 > 0.05). And the coefficient correlation is 0.964. It showed that the level of correlation is a very strong positive correlation. It stated that there is a correlation between students’ reading habits of English texts and students' mastery of simple past tense in 10th grade of MA Ihyaul Ulum’ which has a significant positive correlation with a category of very high correlation.
