Abstract

Pronunciation played an important part in communication because it made speech clear and understandable. Pronunciation errors of sound in one word could lead to misunderstanding. The distinct sounds would cause distinct meanings. That was why students’ errors analizing was urgently needed to find out their difficulties in pronouncing English words. The purpose of this study was to answer the formulated problems by the researcher, namely the problems faced by the students in reading recount text, the kinds of students’ pronunciation errors, and the factors that caused students’ pronunciation errors. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative as the research method. This study was conducted at one of Islamic Junior High Schools in Kudus with 12 students of the 8th graders as the participants. The data sources were obtained from the primary data, in the form of the results of oral test and data information obtained by interview. The next was secondary data in the form of data on books and journals related to the object of study, as well as official documentation from research results. Several techniques used in the data collection process were observation, oral test, interview, and documentation. For research validity, the data was tested through source triangulation and technique triangulation. In this research, the obtained data was analyzed through three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of this research showed : 1) There were three problems faced by students in reading recount text, those were the difficulty in pronouncing English words, the less practice, and students’ understanding. 2) There were two kinds of students’ pronunciation errors in reading recount text , namely misplaced word stress and errors in intonation. 3) There were three factors that caused students’ pronunciation errors, those were students’ mother tongue, social environment, and students’ motivation.
