Abstract

Textbook is one of the most used learning tools in every grade level of students at school. Textbook is an important learning material that contains text and pictures that is used in many schools to facilitate learning activities. Although most of the textbooks have been examined by the government, teachers must be careful and selective to choose which textbook is suitable according to the characteristics and psychology of their students. Examining textbooks according to the students' readability is important. It can improve students' abilities in understanding the material to be delivered. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach as the research design. The subjects are the texts in the textbook entitled BAHASA INGGRIS SMA/MA/SMK/MK KELAS X by Utami Widiati, Zuliati Rohmah, and Furaidah published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The researcher uses 21 reading texts as the data. Flesch Reading Ease Formula and Flesch Kincaid Grade Level used as the instruments of this study to measure the readability level of reading texts. In this research, she found that readability of reading texts in the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook are not suitable for the 10th grade students. Based on the result of Flesch Reading Ease Formula, from 21 reading texts, 12 reading texts are too easy for the 10th grade students, 4 reading texts are too high for the 10th grade students, and only 5 reading texts that is suitable for the 10th grade students. Meanwhile the result of Flesch Kincaid Grade Level showed that 13 reading texts have low readability for the 10th grade students, 3 reading texts have high readability for the 10th grade students, and only 5 reading texts that are suitable for the 10th grade students.
