Abstract

This research discusses the use of YouTube vlog to improve speaking skill. The objectives of this study are: 1) To explain the perception of the third semester students in an English education department in Indonesia to the use of YouTube vlog in improving the students’ speaking skill, 2) To explain the obstacles faced by the third semester students in an English education department in Indonesia in using YouTube vlog to improve the students’ speaking skill, and 3) To explain the strategies used by the Lecturer of speaking for professional context and the third semester students in an English education department in Indonesia in using YouTube vlog to improve the students’ speaking skill. This research is qualitative research with descriptive analysis techniques. The analysis was obtained by searching and compiling data systematically. The data obtained comes from the results of observations, interviews and documentation. Several informants participated in this study, namely the Lecturer of speaking for professional context and 8 students of the third semester students in an English education department in Indonesia. The results showed that: 1) YouTube vlog encourages student self-monitoring. The benefit of the use YouTube vlog is the lecturer can maximize the evaluation because the clip can be replayed again and again without time limitations like if in the classroom, and utilizing YouTube vlog as a medium of learning English is effective in creating the conditions and the learning environment interesting, fun, and interactive. Some students felt shy, scared and nervous when performing in front of the camera, producing the target language during vlogging was not as effective as speaking with a native speaker, and there is no interaction during the process of vlogging, only interacting in front of the video camera. 2) The obstacles faced by the third semester students in an English education department in Indonesia in using YouTube vlog to improve the students’ speaking skill are inhibition, cognitive and affective interference, technicalproblem, and time requirements. 3) The strategies used by the Lecturer of English education department in Indonesia in using YouTube vlog to improve the students’ speaking skill are giving motivation, technical capability, professional development, and time management. The strategies used by the third semester students in an English education department in Indonesia in using YouTube vlog to improve the students’ speaking skill are watching various English vlog and choosing one of good English vlog, then imitating about the accent, pronunciation, and how to speak fluency. Next step, they think and write the sentences that will be used, open the dictionary and find the meaning that is appropriate to show in the video.
