Abstract
Textbook is an instrument for teacher and student in the teaching and learning process. It used to fulfil the teacher and learner’s need and support the triumph of learning objectives. Therefore, selecting textbook is a challenging task because it required some aspects to be evaluated. The English language skill is one of aspects that need to be evaluated because it encouraged students’ communicative competence both in productive and receptive skills. The evaluation should use the specific theory so that it can guide the teachers to choose the most suitable textbook for their purposes. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate the English language skills in the textbook entitled “Bright An English” (the case study of textbook for first grade junior high school) by using Alan Cunningsworth’s Theory. This research applied the qualitative descriptive research with content analysis design. The subject of this study is an English textbook entitled “Bright An English” (the case study of textbook for first grade junior high school) written by Nur Zaida and published in 2022. The researcher analysed the English language skills in the textbook for first semester that consist of four chapters, they are chapter 1 until chapter 4. To collect the research data, this study used human instrument (the researcher) and the indicator checklist by Alan Cunningsworth’s theory. The results of this research showed that the textbook entitled “Bright An English” (the case study of textbook for first grade junior high school) contained four of English language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) that appeared in each chapter of textbook. The result of the evaluation pointed out that the English language skills fulfilled the indicators by Alan Cunningsworth’s theory, and it proofed by the checklist data. The checklist data showed that the reading skill fulfilled all the checklist. While, the writing and listening skills fulfilled most of the checklist. Then, the speaking skill has partially fulfilled the checklist. But the textbook has the disadvantage since there are some materials that inappropriate with some indicators of Alan Cunningsworth’s theory.
