Abstract
Speaking is one of the crucial skills in English. Nevertheless, English learners found problems in speaking, especially English speaking anxiety which experienced by Islamic English club students of MAN 2 Kudus. This research aimed to investigate 1) English speaking anxiety level of Islamic English club students, 2) factors contributed to their English speaking anxiety in speaking performance, and 3) strategies to overcome their English speaking anxiety. Qualitative methodology was used in this research by utilizing observation, questionnaire, and semi-structured interview as the research instruments. The subject of this research were Islamic English club students of tenth and eleventh grade and the tutor. While the research was set in MAN 2 Kudus. To analyze the data, the researcher applied data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. This research was weighty to be conducted since the results showed Islamic English Club students of MAN 2 Kudus experienced English speaking anxiety in their speaking performance, evident in physically and behavior indicators. It is supported by the questionnaire results, which was obtained numerous level of students’ speaking anxiety from mildly anxious to very anxious. Various factors contributed to their English speaking anxiety. Internal factor encompassed students’ fear, mindset, and low self-esteem. External factor included could be categorized as social factor and linguistic factor. Social factors were associated to other students’ behavior who like to laugh and classroom environment. Linguistic factor could be seen from lack of grammar, lack of vocabulary, and bad pronunciation. Therefore, it was necessary to find strategies to overcome students’ English speaking anxiety in their speaking performance. A number of strategies are investigated, including religious strategies, memorization strategies, cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies. Religious strategies included reading Basmallah and Dzikr; memorization strategies involved reviewing and reading notes; cognitive strategies could be implemented by practicing and critical and analytical thinking; metacognitive strategies could be seen from planning and organizing notes as well as doing evaluation; affective strategies encompassed motivation and relaxation; and social strategies could be categorized as group performance and classroom environment.
