Abstract

Language is a means of conveying our ideas to the minds of other people. In English there are singular and plural nouns that both can serve as references. However most of the students feel difficult to comprehend the text. They might misinterpret what a writer writes. Written language sometimes can be ambiguous to an addressee. They need a means to gain their intended meaning called deixis. Based on the explanation above, the researcher interested in analyzing kinds of deixis in English writing class. The objective of the research are: (1) to classify the type of deixis words in the Analytical Recount Texts written by the students of MA Darul Ulum Kudus Grade X in the school year 2020/2021. (2) To explain the types of deixis that is most dominant found in the analytical Recount Texts written by the students of MA Darul Ulum Kudus Grade X in the school year 2020/2021. The researcher chooses the compositions of the grade X in MA Darul Ulum in the school year 2020/2021 as a unit analysis. In collecting data, the researcher uses test as a technique. The writer uses the descriptive data analysis method to write this research. The processes of the research, the writer collected the submitting assignments of students writing, identified, classified, and analyzed the reference and meanings. The result of data analysis shows that: (1) The students used of the person, place or spatial, time, and discourse deixis in their composition. (2) Student mostly used person deixis which display reference to convey their meaning in their compositions. Then, based on the result analysis, the writer concludes the deixis that found in the students’ composition are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, and discourse deixis, and in this research the student mostly used person deixis in their compositions. Finally, the researcher suggest the teacher to give more knowledge about deixis for the student teaching learning process. For the students, the researcher hope this research can help the students in understanding of deixis, so the students have motivation to improve their English mastery in writing.
