Abstract

In learning English, there are still various difficulties experienced by students. One of these difficulties is learning grammar, especially the English articles. Based on this phenomena, this study aims to find out the errors made by students in using the English articles. The analysis of errors based on the types and sources of errors made by female 8th grade students in Wustha Madinatul Qur'an in writing recount texts. In this research, the researcher used qualitative approach. It was carried out at Wustha Madinatul Qur'an as a religion-based junior high school with more religion-based subjects than other junior high schools. The researcher used written test, observation, and documentation in collecting data. Then the analyzed data that has been obtained by the researcher is used three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of the research analysis showed that students still make errors when using the English article. The errors made by students based on their types are 39 errors for the definite “the” for replacing zero article. Then 22 errors for the indefinite “a/an” for replacing zero article. The next is 6 errors of the zero for replacing definite “the”. The last is 1 error for the zero for replacing indefinite “a/an”. While the source of errors made by students was communication strategies. Students are still elaborating on the use of English articles based on the experience they have had when reading or listening sentences that contain an article without knowing the guidelines for the correct use of the articles. The second was interlingual transfer. Interlingual transfer was as a source of errors most often made by students. Students still applied their first language in writing recount texts. From the results, it showed that students still lack knowledge in mastering grammar, especially English articles.
