Abstract

Code switching is a linguistics word that refers to the activity of utilizing two or more languages during a conversation. In the English Language Teaching (ELT) process, code switching becomes a strategy for the teacher to help the students understand the material. This research discussed about how is the implementation of code switching by the English teacher in the ELT process, what types of code switching used by the English teacher in the ELT process, and how are the students’ perception toward the use of code switching used by the English teacher in the ELT Process. This research is qualitative research. The research took place at X MIPA 2 of MA Ma’ahid Kudus with the Headmaster of MA Ma’ahid Kudus, the Vice of curriculum, the English teacher and five students as the participants. The main instrument in this research is the researcher herself. To collect the data, the researcher conducted some observations, semi-structured interview, and documentations. The researcher analyzed the collected data, then drew some conclusions: 1) The implementation of code switching by the English teacher had three functions; topic switch, affective function, and repetitive function. 2) The English teacher of X MIPA 2 used three types of code switching; inter-sentential code switching, intra-sentential code switching, and emblematic code switching. 3) The students of X MIPA 2 had positive perceptions towards the use of code switching by the English teacher because they were were easier to understand the English material when the teacher used code switching strategy, and more comfortable communicating with the English when the English teacher used code switching.
