Abstract
Direct Learning method is one of the method for teaching reading comprehension. Research objectives of this research are to find out the implementation of Direct learning method at Private vocational high school in mijen , challenges, benefits and drawbacks in teaching reading comprehension. The subjects of this study were tenth grade students of TBSM (Teknik dan Bisnis Sepeda Motor) and English teacher. This research was conducted at Private vocational high school in mijen . This study uses a qualitative method. To collect data researcherr used three techniques, namely, observation, interviews, and documentation. To get the validity of the data researcher used triangulation techniques. The resulting data is then collected, then the researcher reduces the data, displays the data, and draws conclusions. The results of this study are as follows: 1) The Implementation of the direct learning method to teach reading comprehension at Private vocational high school in mijen , are divided into three steps. The first step is preparation, the second step is implementation, and the last step is closing. Teacher and students use the target language directly in learning English in class. Students and teacher are not allowed to use dictionaries or other translation aids, if there are difficulties in interpreting a word, the teacher will display visual aids in the form of pictures, the teacher will also give instructions or body gestures, give expressions and sound so students can understand. 2) The Challenges in using the direct learning method at Private vocational high school in mijen are students and teacher must speak the target language, students lack confidence, the teacher must be like a mother who teaches language to children, it is difficult to build student enthusiasm, it requires a long process. 3) The benefits of using the direct learning method at Private vocational high school in mijen are improving reading comprehension without using translation aids, improving English speaking skills, training students to think critically and creatively, making pronunciation better, not relying on translation aids. The drawbacks are that it requires a high focus, requires a lot of time and a long process, has the potential to cause ambiguity in meaning, requires a combination with the TPR (Total Physical Response) method to make it more effective.
