Abstract

One of the most important English skills to be mastered is speaking skill. It is useful to communicate effectively. Nevertheless, most students rarely practice their speaking skill because of several reasons. One of speaking problems faced by the students is lack of confidence. In Covid-19 pandemic, teaching-learning process moves into online and there is limited meeting between teacher and students. The teacher should choose the right teaching method to solve the students’ difficulties. In this study, the researcher tried to describe the implementation of Project-based learning to encourage students’ self-confidence in speaking ability on online learning system and its challenges. The students will be asked to complete the project consists of interview video. The researcher used field research and chooses SMK Walisongo Pecangaan Jepara as the setting of place in this research. Moreover, the researcher also utilized qualitative method to analyze the data consists of classroom observation, interview, and documentation. The subject of the research is the twelfth-grade students Perbankan Syariah (PBS). The result showed that students’ self-confidence was improved through Project-based learning implemented by the teacher. This is proven by the students’ interview video. The teacher implemented Project-based learning by following the Project-based learning steps. The challenges faced by both teacher and students. The teacher should motivate the students one by one out of learning process because the students have low motivations. Furthermore, the challenges faced by the students are related to the bad signal and limited quota. Besides, less understanding also became the students' challenge. They did not get teacher explanations by face-to-face meetings. They should be explore their own knowledge and search the material by themselves from other sources.
