Abstract
Small Group Discussion method is an active, constructive, and cooperative learning method in order to improve student learning abilities. The title was taken based on the phenomena or problems that exist in field and attracted researcher to raise the topic. Research objectives in this study were to find out the implementation of Small Group Discussion method, the problems and solutions in overcoming the problem in the implementation of Small Group Discussion method. The subject in this study were the tenth graders, English teacher, and headmaster of Walisongo Senior High School Pecangaan. This study uses descriptive qualitative method, namely describes the phenomena that exist in writing descriptive text by implementing the Small Group Discussion method in the tenth grade of Walisongo Senior High School Pecangaan. The research result showed as follows: 1. The implementation of Small Group Discussion method in writing descriptive text for tenth grade in Walisongo Senior High School Pecangaan Jepara, were: (a) The English teacher explained the Small Group Discussion method in a descriptive text (b) The English teacher divided groups consist of 4 to 6 students to discuss topics (c) The English teacher asked to the students to discuss about the topics in a group while she walked around from one group to another group forhelping the students’ problem (d) Each group presented the results of their discussion (descriptive text writing) and the English teacher asked students from other groups to ask questions (e) The last, the group leader collected a report on the results of discussion (descriptive text) to the English teacher. 2. The problems in the implementation of the Small Group Discussion method in writing descriptive text for tenth grade in Walisongo Senior High School Pecangaan Jepara included (a) It needed a long time in implementing Small Group Discussion method (b) The discussion deviated from the topics of discussion (c) The class became noisy (d) Only some students were active in learning activity. 3. The solutions to overcome the problems of the implementation of the Small Group Discussion method in writing descriptive text for tenth grade in Walisongo Senior High School Pecangaan Jepara offered by English teacher were (a) Set an alarm on her cellphone to remind the duration of learning time (b) Asking questions and gave interesting activity in order to draw students back to the topic of discussion (c) Reminding the rules of discussion (d) Giving motivation or encouragement to passive students to be active.
