Abstract

English is one of the most common languages spoken in everyday activities. To support mastery of English skills, students had to learn a vocabulary as a basis for communication. Based on the realities that have occurred in the MTs Darul Ulum Kudus, seventh grade lack vocabulary. According to the source of data, this research is a type of field research, where researchers go directly into the field for materials that approach the truth. The approach used in this is qualitative, which is research that does not use calculation. The location of this research is MTs Darul Ulum Kudus. The research subject are seventh grade, English teacher, and Principal of MTs Darul Ulum Kudus. For data sources, the researcher used primary data and secondary data. For data collection technique the researcher conducted by way of interview, direct observation, involved in learning and teaching process, and by documenting what the researcher had and seen. The implementation of the use of flashcards to increase vocabulary mastery in the seventh graders was a success. This is evident with students who are already able to list adjectives and nouns that relate to person. Furthermore, students were able to arranged sentences using the words that had just been studied in the media flashcards. Things that support the use of flashcard media include messages that are presented briefly and easily understood by students. In addition, the use of flashcards media makes students not easily get bored and enjoy the teaching and learning process. While there is still a problem with such media use, such as each student having different abilities, flashcards must be adjusted to the number of students in the class. To overcome the problems, the teachers present a solution by presenting flashcards larger than usual and providing motivation to students when the teaching and learning process using flashcard media is in progress, since an optimum learning condition can be achieved if the teacher is able to control the students in a pleasant atmosphere to achieve the goal of learning.
