Abstract

Technology plays an important role in developing teaching instruction and learning styles of students in improving students' English skills, particularly in listening, in the 21st century. This study found that using podcasts to create classroom activities is very helpful, and students appear to be very motivated and interested in engaging in listening practices in the classroom. This study aims to see improvements in students’ listening ability after using podcast as a learning media. Moreover, it tends to know the implementation of podcast for teaching and students’ responses toward the implementation. The study used qualitative method to identify the students’ listening improvement and to know the implementation and students’ responses with interview. The subjects were seventh semester students of an English department in Indonesia. In addition the data collection was using observation and an interview with ten students. Based on the CEFR test and the interview results, it showed an increase in students’ listening ability after the use of podcast. The result of the CEFR test performed by 10 respondents could be drawn to the conclusion that most of the respondents reached the intermediate level by 50%. That indicates that the use of the podcast media has significantly influenced the increase in listening skills of the seventh semester student. The interview result also showed that students felt that the use of podcast was more fun than the conventional method use in the class. It was also helpful in improving the students’ pronunciation words, adding new vocabulary, and improving students’ English grammar. The advantage of using podcast was time flexibility, while the disadvantage relates to the lack of vocabulary.
