Abstract

There are four basic skills that must be mastered in English learning. One of them is listening skills which can be improved by using video or audio content from Instagram. Instagram is one of social media that have massive user including students. Furthermore, the benefits of Instagram in education sector can be maximized with several strategies to obtain new way teaching and learning method such as using Instagram features and contents in listening learning. This study is aimed to analyze 1) Instagram accounts and contents mostly accessed by the students to enhance their listening skills, 2) students’ perception about using social media Instagram content to enhance their listening skills, and 3) the benefits and drawbacks of using Instagram as media to enhance listening skills. The research was conducted in SMA 1 Gebog Kudus especially in XI languages major. The participant of this study recommended by the teachers, they are four students from XI languages. The research used qualitative descriptive approach and the data was collected by using three techniques, those are; interview, observation, and documentation. The data validity in this research used source triangulation, techniques triangulation, and time triangulation. The result of this study showed that; 1) Instagram accounts that mostly accessed by by the students are idols, singers, celebrities, etc. and contents that mostly accessed to enhance their listening skills are video and audio such music, games, speech, explanation about something, movies, etc. 2) The students’ have positive perception and agreed if using Instagram contents could enhance their listening skills, because several students obtain new knowledge when accessing Instagram content. 3) Instagram is beneficial as listening learning media based on its features and contents especially its simplicity and flexibility. Then the drawbacks for the students’ are the global and native contents which several of them contain unnecessary content and hard to understand.
