Abstract

Textbooks are books that are used as a supporting tool in the learning process by a teacher or student, besides that textbooks also contain learning material in accordance with predetermined rules. In selecting textbooks, several eligibility criteria are needed from the content of learning materials so that caution is needed in selecting textbooks so that later they can support learning activities optimally. The focus of this research is to determine the quality of the textbook "English" by Mahrukh Bashir, which is seen from the 6 aspects of the criteria for a good book according to Arif Kurnianto, and the writing assignment using the Mayumi Kobayakawa theory, and also seen from the compatibility between the textbook and the 2013 curriculum. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, namely the method used to provide explanations, describe and classify a data source through various techniques, questionnaires, observations, surveys, interviews, and also text as it is based on existing facts. Meanwhile, the primary source for this research is a book entitled "English" by Mahruk Bashir which was published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in 2017. The results of this study are as follows: The English textbook meets the criteria for a good book according to Arif Kurnianto, namely: (1) Appropriateness between the material and the curriculum (2) Conformity between the material and the exercise assignments available in the textbook (3) The textbook must be attractive to students, so students want to know about the textbook (4) The textbook must be able to encourage students (5) the content textbooks must be illustrative (6) material in textbooks must enable students to do tasks in textbooks. In this book the language used is also easy to understand by students. However, there are also some drawbacks in this book, namely the absence of vocabulary aids that can help students understand the material. and the writing tasks according to Mayumi Kobayakawa, the found of the writer in the textbook are the exercise 34,8 %, sentence ordering 6,5%, sentence combining 2,2 %, Summary writing 19,6 %, Question and Answer 8,7 %, Dictation 6,5 %, Fill in the blank without translation 8,7 %, Close test 13 %. And also the textbook accordance with the curriculum as follows: (1) content feasibility (compatibility with KI and KD), in this textbook KI 1 and KI 2 are all mentioned, while KD in this book is not all mentioned, only KD 1.1, 2.2, 1.4, 1.10, 1.5, 2.12, 2.16, 2.11, 2.15. In this textbook chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and also 8 as a whole are in accordance with the 2013 curriculum.
