Abstract

Language might be considered as fundamental in social life. People use language as a tool to communicate, build relationships with others, and maintain these relationships. However, sometimes they require language that is not commonly used to express the meaning of the message to be delivered, therefore it is important to learn language. The study of language is included within the field of linguistics. Linguistics is the scientific study of language structure through the combination of words, sentences, and sounds to create meanings. Semantics is the branch of linguistics. Semantics can be formed in spoken language such as song. In this study, the writer analyzed figurative language in Harry Styles’s English song lyrics. Figurative language is symbolic lyrics to tell something without using standard meaning of words in order to make certain effect and special meaning. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this study is an album “Harry’s House” produced by Harry Styles. The researcher uses Reaske’s theory to support this research in analyzing figurative language and types of meaning used in the Harry’s House album. The object of this study consists of thirteen English songs/tracks from the Harry’s House album. The result after analyzing the object shows that there are eight types of figurative language found, such as allusion with 12 data, followed by symbol with 11 data, hyperbole with 7 data, metaphor with 6 data, and then parallelism, personification, synecdoche with each 2 data, and the last is paradox with only 1 data. The researcher found figurative languages in 43 totals of data used figurative language in the Harry’s House album. Based on the discussion and analysis above, in the 43 totals data, the most figurative language used in the album is allusion. The researcher can conclude that the use of allusion as the dominant figure of speech in the album aims to convey a message by providing references from an event, famous place, or person.
