Abstract
This research is motivated by a phenomenon that exist among students, which is the limited ability of students in speaking English, especially in English classes. Every students mostly faces problems to speak English. This is caused by several factors that hinder and cause difficulties. Problems in speaking faced by the students will make it hard to master the language and comprehend the knowledge of the language itself. The aim of this research is to find the students‟ difficulties factors in speaking English and find out solutions to the difficulties faced by students in speaking English. In this research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research were eighth grade students who is selected using purposive sampling technique. The researcher collected the data by interview, observation, and documentation. The interview data was obtained from English teacher also the eighth grade students in MTs. The result of this research showed that the most from respondent have difficulties in speaking English. The students‟ difficulties in speaking English are influenced by two factors, namely linguistic factors and psychological factors. Linguistic factors consist of a lack of grammar, lack of vocabulary, and a lack of pronunciation, while psychological factors are fear of making mistakes, anxiety, shyness, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. Linguistic and psychological factors are interrelated in the case of students. From the finding and discussion, it can be concluded that students have problem in speaking. The students have difficulties in pronunciation, lack of grammar, difficult to memorize vocabulary. These three factor are the biggest problem for students, those factors are the intermediaries for the emergence of several psychological factors in students, each of which is interrelated with one another. The students are afraid to speak, shy to speak in front of the class, anxious, not confidence, and have no motivation in learning speaking English. Of these problems, the most dominant peoblem is pronunciation. Most of them stated that they were afraid to speak because they did not know how to pronounce an English word or sentence correctly. They complained a lot about the different writing and pronouncing method. Based on finding of the research, the researcher also found several ways as solutions to the students‟ difficulties in speaking English, these include factors such as students themselves like mood and feelings, the environment like friends, teachers, the learning process, and the class situation
