Abstract

Textbook is a mandatory learning media that supports English teacher to deliver English material in class. The use of textbooks is omnipresent in English classes all over the world, Indonesian schools are also using English textbooks as teaching source.To facilitate language learning, textbooks are expected to not only provide language as an abstract system by describing its grammatical rules and vocabulary but also present language as how it is used in real world. This research aimed to analyse the visual representation and textual representation of Islamic values in an EFL textbook entitled “English for Nusantara” for Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School. The object chosen is a textbook published by The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia. Critical Discourse Analysis method is used to meet the aim of this research. The results of this research revealed that the Islamic values contained in EFL textbook entitled “English for Nusantara” for Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School are sincerity, lovingness, endurance, kindness, modesty, responsibility, patience, self-control, courage, self-respect, helpfulness, cooperation, charitableness, generosity, good manners, brotherliness, striving, hard work, and love of knowledge. Each values is listed in five chapters with five different themes; Chapter I “Celebrating Independence Day”, Chapter II “Kindness Begins with Me”, Chapter III “Love Our World”, Chapter IV “No Littering”, and Chapter V “Embrace Yourself”. The Islamic values represented visually through illustrations of a conversation between some people and textually through illustrations of some kinds of text such as narrative text and recount text. Mostly the represented Islamic values conveyed implicitly by demonstrating action through uttered sentences.
