Abstract

This study aims to explore the experiences of high school students in learning English. How does a learner act as a person who must have the will to learn, what encouragement makes learners have the desire to master a foreign language ability, especially English. The existence of this encouragement every learner has characteristics or steps that are not the same, it is influenced by personality. Significantly, this study was studied to determine the type of motivation and personality of students or learners that influence learning English. In this study, using narrative investigation to achieve the goal. Three students participated by sharing their different experiences in learning English from elementary, junior high to high school through stories where they had to go through difficulties, support, and anxiety that were within themselves. The focus of research on the theme of motivation and personality will be to find barriers and learning styles that students have to create habits in learning English. The findings from this narrative inquiry study indicate that two types of motivation affect students, namely extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation even though the strength lies in extrinsic motivation. Likewise, different personalities form learning styles with different study habits as well so the talent tendencies in each student to learn English are not the same. Research has found that extrovert students will be more successful in learning languages because they talk more, introvert students generally have higher academic achievements, and ambivert students tend to have a balanced talent and are quite good. To deal with these differences, students and teachers must have awareness so that with knowledge of the types of motivation and personality of students, they must apply suitable learning styles such as kinesthetic, visual, and auditory.
