Abstract

Textbooks, which is used widely in English classrooms around the world, utilize topics and subject contents which convey some social and cultural values. One of the values that can be carried in the textbook and is important in the modern world is religious moderation. Thus, this study attempts to analyze the representation of religious moderation values in the textbook “Bahasa Inggris, When English Rings a Bell” for 7th grade published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The study aims to uncover how the aforementioned book represents the values of Religious Moderation. The study utilized qualitative approach and was conducted using the method of content analysis proposed by Krippendorff. The study found that the textbook represents the value of religious moderation in 45 instances, and represents 11 out of the 15 values related to religious moderation elaborated by the book “Moderasi Beragama” published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the study entitled “Wasathiyyah Islam to the Road to Moderatism in Indonesia”by Abdurrohman Kasdi, namely Wisdom, Sincerity, Courage, Nationalism, Accommodative towards local culture, Open Mindedness, Equality, Liberty, Humanity, Pluralism, and Non-Discrimination.
