Abstract

Seeing the increasing number of people from the general public and students using taboo language in communicating, especially those often encounter on social media, one of the factors that influence the use of taboo words is the result of watching a movie and then they imitate and practice. Movies are indeed one of the effective language learning media, therefore researchers are interested in choosing movies as research subjects. Researcher raises a movie with a historical genre in which there are elements of Islam. This study aims to explain the types of taboo words, and the motives of taboo words, so that people, especially students, do not carelessly use taboo words in communicating. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method using Wardaugh's theory to categorize the types of taboo words and uses Jay Timothy's theory to determine the motive or reason for taboo words in terms of analyzing data. The results of this study found 36 data of taboo words which were categorized into 5 types of 8 types according to Wardaugh's theory, among others; animal word, religious term, excretion, bodily functions, and death. There are three motives found in the film, including taboo as signifying various emotions, taboo as achieve specific goals, taboo express frustrated anger
